The festival of Dhanteras is observed on the 13th day of Krishna Paksh in the month of Karthik. This is also known as Yamadeep. Dhanteras puja is performed 2 days before Diwali. Dhanteras Puja is also known as Dhanvantri Jayanti Puja. On this festival, we pray for good health and wealth for the family.
Decorated clay idols or photos of Shri Ganesh and Shri Lakshmi are bought from the market. Keep in mind that the trunk of Ganeshji is turned towards the right as it is considered more auspicious. These idols are worshipped on the day of Diwali.
Lakshmi Puja is performed in the evenings on the day of Dhanteras when tiny diyas of clay are lighted to drive away the shadows of evil spirits. In villages cattle are adorned and worshiped by farmers as they form the main source of their income. In south cows are offered special veneration as they are supposed to be the incarnation (Avatar) of Goddess Lakshmi and therefore they are adorned and worshiped on this day.
