The festival of Dhanteras is
observed on the 13th day of Krishna Paksh in the month of Karthik. This
is also known as Yamadeep. Dhanteras puja is performed 2 days before
Diwali. Dhanteras Puja is also known as Dhanvantri Jayanti Puja. On this
festival, we pray for good health and wealth for the family.
Decorated clay idols or photos of Shri Ganesh and Shri Lakshmi are
bought from the market. Keep in mind that the trunk of Ganeshji is
turned towards the right as it is considered more auspicious. These
idols are worshipped on the day of Diwali.
Lakshmi Puja is performed in the evenings on the day of Dhanteras when
tiny diyas of clay are lighted to drive away the shadows of evil
spirits. In villages cattle are adorned and worshiped by farmers as they
form the main source of their income. In south cows are offered special
veneration as they are supposed to be the incarnation (Avatar) of
Goddess Lakshmi and therefore they are adorned and worshiped on this
