Mahashivaratri festival celebration in India

The India festivals are never ending and the Indians always stay happy due to these festivals throughout the year. The India is the best example of unity in diversity because of numerous cultural heritages in the country. The numerous religions in India live together happily without any dispute. The majority of people in India are divided into two main religions Hindus and Muslims. The Muslims celebrate Iid and Ramzan and Hindus celebrate Mahashivaratri, Diwali and Holi, etc.

The Shivratri festival symbolizes lord Shiva and the decvotees of shiva celebrate it every year on the 13^TH or 14^th day in the Krishna Paksha of the month of Maagha according to Hindu calendar. The festival is celebrated in unique manner by following all the holy rituals. One of the rituals is offering leaves of Bael to lord shiva. The devotees of lord Shiva praise him through out the day with all types of pooja(prayers) to please lord Shiva. The devotees don’t take single piece of food throughout the day and keep fast till the night. The fast is broken only after the moon appears in the night and at that time the Prasadam is taken according to the rituals mentioned in the holy books. As per the beliefs if a devotee prays to lord Shiva with pure heart on this day then lord gives him gifts that he wishes about. Also it is said that if you want to get free from all these vicious circle of birth and death then pleasing lord Shiva will help you get away from this vicious circle.

As per Hindu mythology lord Shiva is the creator of universe accompanied by Lord Vishnu and Lord Brahma. When the creation of universe got completed then lord Shiva was resting. After some moments Mata Parvati(wife of lord Shiva) entered the room and asked him about the most pleasurable moment for him during the whole creation. To this question lord replied that the 13^th day at the night when the moon appeared; was the most pleasurable moment for him. This answer of lord Shiva was repeated by Mata Parvati many times during the day and other creatures of the world also heard it. Due to this reason this day became the day of holy festival of Maha Shivaratri 2011.
