The devotees of lord Shiva eagerly wait for this festival. The festival is not only celebrated in India but in other parts of the world also.

There are many beliefs about the festival in the Hindu holy books. One of the stories that have been mentioned in the holy books is related to the creation of the world. The story states that when lord Shiva was resting after the creation of the world Parvati(wife of lord Shiva) entered his room. Pravati asked him the most memorable moment during the whole period of creation. For this question lord Shiva replied that the 13^th day when the moon was bright and beautiful was the moment most pleasurable to him. When Parvati heard it she repeated it many times and other creatures also heard the importance of 13^th day for lord Shiva. After that the devotees of lord Shiva started celebrating this day as Shivaratri.

On the day of this festival lord Shiva was born and after that the devotees of lord Shiva started celebrating as the day of Shiva. All the devotees all around the world eagerly wait for this day. it is also believed that lord remains very happy on this day so if you pray him and ask for anything then you will definitely get it. The devotees of lord Shiva pray for whole day without taking a single piece of bread in their mouth. The devotees break their fast when the moon becomes appears in the night. After looking at moon the devotees follow all the rituals and happily sleep afterwards. The temples get full by the devotees on this holy day all over India.
