What is special about the Navratri festival 2012?
This year Navratri festival is coming on 16 October. This time is the best time when Goddess Durga is worshipped by people. It is believed that in these nine days the power of Goddess is the maximum and helps the devotees to fight all the evils. People do the path of Chandi which gives the information about the powers of Maa shakti. This time people sing Durga aarti which tells the devotees about the great power of the maa Durga. It is true that the greatness and energy of the Goddess can’t be expressed in words. During these nine days of Navratri festival the cosmetic energy of Goddess Durga is in full power.
The Devi is known to have beautiful, compassionate and pleasing personality. In Bengal she is known by the name of Durga or Kali, in Gujarat she is known by the name of Bhadrakali, in Jammu Kashmir she is known by the name of Vaishno Devi, in kernataka she is well known by the name of Chamunda, in Maharashtra she is known by the name of bhavani Maa or Santoshi Maa, in Assam she is known as Kamakhya devi. According to the character all forms of Durga are given names. For all the people she is “maa” that is the universal mother. She is known to protect all her devotees from bad energy and evils.
In durga puja the 700 verses of the famous Devi Mahatmyam are sung. The navratri puja is done in a very traditional manner. The first three days of the festival are celebrated to offer prayers to Goddess Durga who is known to be the Goddess of power. She rides on the Lion and wears red attire. Then the next three days are celebrated for offering prayers to the Goddess Laxmi who is known to be the Goddess of prosperity and the Goddess of wealth. She is generally dressed in golden attire and sits on an owl. The last three days are celebrated for offering prayers to Goddess saraswati. Saraswati maa is known to be the goddess of art as well as the goddess of knowledge. She wears white attire and rides on a white swan.
How to do or perform Navratri puja?
At this time people go on fasting and bring the idols of maa Durga in their homes. The puja is followed in a very traditional and with all customs.in many Indian homes, people keep a kalash and change the water in that for all nine days. This kalsh is put on some raised platform and on some grains in the puja room. Every day some bhajans and mantras are chanted by the devotees and fresh food, flowers and sweets are offered to the Goddess.
