The festival of dance and worship is known as the festival of Navratri. The meaning of Navratri in the Sanskrit language is nine nights. The meaning of Nava means nine and the meaning of Ratri is nights.in these nine days and nine nights people worship the Goddess Durga and other nine forms of the divine Goddess Durga. This festival is celebrated in the honor of the nine forms of Goddess Durga. The significance of the celebration of Navratri is that this festival is divided into nine days and people offer their prayers to the Goddess Durga and her other forms.

There are many historic stories associated with this festival.It is believed that Goddess Durga killed Demon Mahishasura who had a buffalo like head in the battle which lasted for around nine days and on the night of tenth day. That is why this day is called as Vijaya Dashmi. As well as the festival of Dusherra is also celebrated on the very same day as on this day lord Rama won the battle with Ravana. Make sure that your home is properly cleaned. This is done as when you do the puja, then you basically invite Goddess in your home. All this is done just a day before the navratri begins.
Get your house cleaned and ready. You are inviting Goddess into the home. Usually this is done on the Amavasya that is a day before the beginning of Navratri.
On the day one of navratri some mud taken from auspicious place is taken and then a bed of that mud is prepared and over that the barley seeds are placed for sowing. Above this an Earthern kalash which is filled with water is kept. Even a dry coconut is placed which is wrapped with the help of mango leaves. This kalash is symbolic of Goddess Durga.
