What is Shravan Mas Shiva Puja ?
In the calendar of Hindus, when counting is done from Chaitra, Saavan is fifth month. Saavan month is named so as sky is ruled by star ‘shravan’. Therefore it is also known as sravan mas. A Shravan mas is considered as holiest month of whole year. There are many ceremonies and festivals celebrated almost on every day of this month. This month is considered very auspicious in Hindu mythology.
Each Monday of shravan maas is known as ‘shravan ke somvaar’, which is known to be very propitious day of Shiva. In temples on shivling the Dharanatra is hanged and milk and holy water is used for ‘Abhishek’. Lord Shiva worship is done by offering flowers, Bel fruits and Bel leaves. Devotees also chant the Shiva mantras and do vrat.
As far as legend is concerned, oceans were churned i.e. (samudra manthan) was done in this month. Different good and evil things emerged from oceans. A poison named halaal also emerged which was swollen by Lord Shiva and he stored it in his throat. This is the reason why lord Shiva is also known as Neelkanth.
So after this Gods, started offering Ganges water to Shiva in order to reduce the effect of poison. As all this happened in shravan maas, the devotees worships lord Shiva and observe a fast on Monday ie. Saavan ke somvaar. In Hindu mythology it’s believed that worshipping lord Shiva and by observing fast on saavan ke somvaar brings prosperity and devotees are blessed by Lord Shiva.
Every day of this month have a ritual and significance like saavan Monday is considered as a day of Shiva, saavan Tuesday is day of Gauri Mata, saavan Wednesday is day of Vitthal. Buddha or Guru is worshipped on shravan Thursday, Maa Laxmi and Tulsi is worshipped on Shravan Friday, on Saavan Saturday Shani puja is done. On Sundays Surya Devta is worshipped.
