What to do in Adhik Maas Puja
If we take a look at the solar and lunar calendars we will find that there is gap of 11 days between both of these. This gap is due to the time taken by the sun to complete its one cycle. In the solar calendar the months are 30.44 days long and the year consist of 365.28 days. But on the other hand the lunar year have 29.53 days due to this the lunar year has 354.36 days. This makes the difference of 10.92 days between the two calendars. Now due to this difference the gap between the two increases to a month in the period of three years.
Adhik Maas was added to bridge this gap between both these calendars. Adhik Maas 2012 dates is also known as Mal Maas or extra month which will fall in the month of August. Generally in this month the auspicious work are avoided by the people because the Sun does not enter in any Zodiac signs. But on the other hand performing spiritual work in this month has great significance.
It is believed that in the lunar calendar there are twelve months and to each one of them one god is assigned. But when this extra month was calculated no lord was assigned to it. It did not like to be called as Mal Maas so it went to lord Vishnu who gave him the name of Purushottam Maas. Since then this month is known for the worship of Lord Krishna.
Adhik Maas Puja consists of worshipping the Lord Vishnu. People visit various temples of Lord Vishnu and their incarnations. They also recite Bhavad Gita Puran and Bhagvad Gita. The vrat start from the first day and continues till the last day. People must eat sattvic food means food prepared with full cleanliness and should be vegetarian.
