Mahashivaratri Importance for Devotees
Mahashivaratri is considered to be one of the most important Hindu festivals which is celebrated with great zeal and fervor throughout India. For the devotees of Lord Shiva, it is a very special festival as celebrating it gives them a chance to show their love and devotion towards Lord Shiva.
Mahashivaratri importance can also test a person’s ability and commitment – the devotees have to observe fast in the daytime and have to remain awake throughout the night, worshipping Lord Shiva. Countless persons overcome these tough conditions and celebrate Mahashivaratri because of their strong belief that Lord Shiva will fulfill all their wishes and solve all their problems.
As per Hindu religious scriptures, Mahashivaratri is celebrated on the 14th day of the dark fortnight of the Phalguna month (Hindu calendar) because rituals performed during this period please Lord Shiva the most. This special period is celebrated as Mahashivaratri, with devotees of Lord Shiva observing fast, singing bhajans and offering prayers to bless them and fulfill all their wishes. All the rituals are strictly conducted as mentioned in the ancient Hindu scripture, Shiv Purana. Poojas are performed after every three hours.
The devotees of Lord Shiva strongly believe that celebrating this festival will help them in getting rid of all their sins and problems. Also, it is believed that the devotee will attain moksha or salvation and will be freed from the cycle of life and death. He will reach the heavenly abode of Lord Shiva and will reside there happily ever after. On this day, all the devotees would visit Shiva temples in countless numbers and offer their prayers.
Lord Shiva is worshipped in the form of Shivalinga and offerings are made to the deity by bathing it with milk, honey, sugar, water, yoghurt and ghee. Afterwards, a thick paste of all these items is applied on the Shivalinga. Mahashivaratri importance is especially for the women folk. Both married and unmarried ladies celebrate Mahashivaratri with great devotion. Lord Shiva and his wife Goddess Parvati are considered to be the ideal couple. Unmarried girls observe fast to seek a husband as good as Lord Shiva while married ladies seek the Lord’s blessings for a happy married life. If done with full sincerity and devotion, Lord Shiva and Goddess Parvati fulfill all wishes and bless all devotees with a life full of happiness and prosperity.
